Inching closer to a finished studio!

Molly and I went off early for our walk, and it was a good thing. The temperature plummeted this afternoon to 22 degrees! We took the low road today, walking down to the entrance and then down Rich Gap Rd. until we got to the horse paddocks in the valley. The horses were there and inquisitive about our presence. I don't think they see many people on foot!
Down the hill we go, on an untraveled path!

Molly loves her walkie.

The farm in the valley at the end of our road

The road is full of curves and modest hills.

The horses we see every day.

They all turned to see who was passing by.

Farther along, looking back toward where we came from.

Our entrance sign.
This afternoon, I made a quick trip to the fabric store again (that makes three trips in three days!) to get border fabric for the quilt I made. Then, I checked in on the studio progress. What a surprise! They will be finished tomorrow, and we can bring in the machines. Woo hoo!
The bathroom

We also bought the boards for the design wall! They are the pink sheets in the back of the room.

Molly checked it all out.

Pretty soon, this will be full of sewing and quilting fun!
Puttin' on the woolies tonight! It should be very cold and windy, according to the weatherman. Below zero tomorrow. Brrrrrr! Until then, stay warm and I'll post tomorrow.

Walkies, sewing, and floor progress

Two posts in one day?! I can't help it, I just got back from today's walk with Molly and felt I had to share.
Yesterday it was cloudier but not too bad. Tim stopped so I could get a shot of the house from Rich Gap Rd..
I don't know why it doesn't show up as nicely in a picture...

I think once we get a barn quilt on the peak it will be seen for miles!
One of the things I love about the mountains is how they look different every day. Sun and shadow, fog or rain, always subtly different. Even in the brown of winter.

One of the first houses in this neighborhood

The corner of Crestwood View and Crestwood Dr.

I wish we had a huge tree like this on our lot...

Its a long way back up for Molly and me
Once we got home, we checked in on the fellas and were surprised how far they had gotten on the floor. It is looking good!
Tim assembled one of the shelf units to see how big it is.I have five of these!

Its starting to look like a studio!

Boys hard at work, weather channel says it is -25 in Wisconsin...

Oh yes, I finished the quilt top, but I think I need yet one more trip to the fabric shop for borders. It looks pretty cool hanging there, though.

I love my Georgia home!

Sewing at last, and a new floor going down!!

After another trip to the fabric store to buy a ruler (I already have just about every ruler known to man) I finally had something to do that involved sewing. I watched the Houndstooth Quilt tutorial on Missouri Star Quilt Company's site, and decided it looked like a fun and easy project. I chose the vanilla Moda fabric and the double pink civil war fabric to make it from. Out of my box, but inexpensive for a first project here.
I set up the cutting area in the kitchen where there is an island just the right height for cutting. There are only two preliminary cuts, so it moved along quickly. I sewed the strip sets and cut the pieced blocks out, and then it was off to the races!

Strips and squares cut and ready to sew

Strip sets sub cut into the alternate blocks

How cute!

I set up my sewing area in the guest room next to a window so I could look outside. Its tight, but works okay.

Hey, the quilt rack made a great place to hang the strips waiting to be pressed.

Today, I am sewing the rows together. I only had four of the stripy blocks left over, and had to cut two squares of each color to finish the top! There wasn't much fabric left, that's for sure.
Sewing together the 'webbed' rows. (I am in good company; Eleanor Burns and Bonnie Hunter both assemble their quilts this way. I learned it from Eleanor in a class I took years ago)

All that's left is what is on the side table!
Meanwhile, the flooring finally arrived! Tim and Mike are down in the studio as I type putting it down. I am so excited, I can hardly stand it, but have the quilt to keep me busy until they finish. Maybe tomorrow we will be able to get some of the sewing stuff into the studio. Yippee! Now, its back to the sewing table.
We picked this rustic flooring with the saw marks left in.

Molly approves.

All these boxes will be used up in the end. That's a lot of flooring!!

No go quilt show...

First, I must give a nod to New Years in the new house. I did manage to stay awake until midnight, and then went off to bed, ready to start the new adventure in 2015.

Molly didn't make it...neither did Tim!

2015! Woo hoo!

My first selfie of the new year. ha ha

The new quilt shop opened and Stephanie and I made the trip to town to check it out. I totally forgot to take any pictures in the shop, but will do that the next time we are there. The grand opening isn't until the 15th, so I will snap some pics then.
I bought some 30s prints (even though I have an entire box of them) to add some appliqué to a top I have somewhere in the garage boxes. We'll get to that in a minute... I also got some coordinating fabrics to make a valance for the kitchen window, and two fabrics to make a quilt I saw on Jenny Doan's site.

I thought you might like a peek into the studio, which is almost finished. We are just waiting for the flooring to come, and our contractor says it should be here next week! Yippee! Once the floor is in, we can start taking the machine parts and shelving units in. I am so looking forward to getting going with my quilting again. It has been too long!

Trim is done, walls all painted and the lighting is wonderful!
Looking from the front door, the bathroom is in the corner. We even have TV!

Its a dismal day outside, but that didn't stop Mike from working.

From my sewing area looking back toward the garage. This area is where the machines will be.

and that's it! The ceiling fan will keep us cool in the summer.

The bathroom pocket door saves space.
The only downer this week was trying to locate my quilts for the show. The deadline was yesterday, and poor Tim spent the better part of the afternoon unstacking and restacking boxes, looking for the one with quilt tops in it. Of course, I thought we would be in the studio by now and finding the show quilts would be a whiz, but that didn't happen. We never found the right box, so I will have NO quilts in the show. This will be the first time since joining the Peace River guild that I haven't had any of my own quilts there. My customers will have some quilts in the show, so I don't feel quite so bad. Just really bummed out.

The quilts are in one of those boxes. We just had to find the ones that said 'QUILT TOPS' on them. Easy, right?
Not so much...the elusive quilts stayed lost.
Hopefully, next week this will not look like this.
Well, there are new quilts to be made and new shows ahead to prepare for, so why not look forward and not dwell on what could have been? It is a new year, and I am ready to make a mark in it!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2015

2014 is history, and I am starting my new adventure in Georgia. Because the studio is lacking its flooring, I have not been able to unpack anything to do with quilting. It is getting serious!! I need to sew something. Tomorrow, there is a new quilt shop opening, and I plan to be one of their first paying customers. Until then, have a look at what I accomplished in 2014. A few of the quilts aren't here because I neglected to take their pictures...oops. It struck me that I hadn't made as many quilts as in past years, so I have decided to sew more for myself, and limit how many customer quilts I do. Or at least that's the plan.
Happy 2015; I hope your year is filled with love and joy!

Rain and fog on the mountain

It has been rainy and foggy for a couple of days here, giving us a good reason to stay indoors and paint, hang pictures and continue to unpack. The guest room is almost finished; all it lacks are window treatments. I ordered some valances, and the rep from Home Depot is coming soon to measure for blinds. Yippee! One room done!
The black blob ruining the window view is Tim's new grill...it has been moved!

Don't fret! The peeing dog outside the door is made of paper mache!

I haven't found the quilts for the rack yet. The box is buried somewhere in the garage.

The view out the window, sans grill!

Christmas day, Molly and I  took off for a short walk up the road. I noticed that I could see the church on Lower Owltown Road! We took a ride one day and passed this wonderful little country church! The nice thing about Winter is the views are enhanced by no leaves on the trees. Oh, and a perch on top of a mountain helps, too.
Can you see it?

Now, can you see it? Pretty small, but the steeple really stands out.

That brings us back to yesterday. With the weather a bit yukky, it was impossible to see the church...or just about anything a mile or more away. I love how every day the view changes. The clouds were hanging low and looked like smoke drifting through the mountains.

'Smoky' looking clouds in the mountains

You can really see it here.
Someone is building this house on our road, and it is absolutely on the edge of a cliff!! That deck sticks out over a really steep drop!! Not my cup of tea, but a nice view...

Home again, home again, jiggly jog. Just before the next rainfall!
